Macedonia Church

Macedonia Church members began meeting in 1813. Lawrence County, Ohio would not become a county until two years later. This early beginning makes Macedonia the oldest Black church in Ohio.

In 1821, Macedonia would join with Union Church and Big Rock Church to form the Providence Anti-slavery Baptist Association. The church and its members were active supporters and member of the Underground Railroad.

1849 saw two major changes in the church. First, the congregation saw a remarkable increase in its congregation when the Burlington 37 joined the church. Secondly, an actual church building was constructed on Macedonia Ridge just north of Burlington, Ohio.

Macedonia Church would play a major role in the establishment of other churches within the area. Eight churches would be founded because of Macedonia Church’s existence. Some of those churches were located in Ironton, Pine Grove, Huntington, and Catlettsburg.

In 1870, the church building had to be moved. The original church site had proven to be too damp.

In 1978, Macedonia Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2020, it was placed on Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites.
