Wilson, Thomas

Born in slavery August 17, 1855 in Cabell County, Virginia, Thomas Wilson would have to face many obstacles to become one
of the more successful men in Lawrence County history. A gentleman well respected by all, he would be a community leader
in his neighborhood, a teacher, and an “splendid example of citizenship for people of all races.” Not only did Wilson have to
overcome a lack of education in his youth, he would also face persecution for the color of his skin and serious injuries in his
youth.
Although owned by Frederick Beuhling, Theodore and his brother, Benjamin, were hired out to Edward Wright. Hired out means the brothers were owned by Beuhling, but they worked for Wright. Wright paid Beuhling for their service. In 1861, George Wilson was able to buy his freedom as well as freedom for Theodore and another son, Marcellus.

They settled in near Proctorville. Theodore would begin attending class in Rome. At the age of 19, Theodore would begin his teaching career. He would teach students in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.Although teaching did not pay well, Wilson would become well respected throughout the community.
