Polley Family

In August 1847, David Pauley, slave owner from Kentucky, died. In his will, he not only freed his seven slaves, he also left
them the bulk of his estate. Pauley’s family sued and the former slaves settled for the freedom. They relinquished all rights to
Pauley’s land and money.
After working to free other members of their family and along journey filled with problems, the Polley finally made their way to Lawrence County, Ohio. They settled in Perry Township.

Tragedy would strike the family when on June 6, 1850, nine ofthe Polley children were kidnapped, taken to Kentucky and sold into slavery. The children were followed by Lawrence Countians, so they could be returned to their family. This pursuit would be unsuccessful. This crime would launch a series of court battles lasting over 200 years. Thankfully, the family would be reunited, but only after a Civil War had be fought and won.
