Andis Elementary School in 1958

Located at the junction of State Route 217 and County Road 6, Andis School was built in 1940. It was built to replace six one-room schools in the area. The first students attended classes in 1941. The brick building originally had four classrooms. One teacher taught two grades in each of the classrooms.

It was part of the Dawson Bryant School System. The district consolidated Andis, Deering and Monitor Schools into one district-wide kindergarten to fifth grade elementary school.

Located in Andis, Lawrence Township, the school announced its closure in the summer of 1992. A reunion was held the following year. Former students and teachers traveled from all over the country to remember their school days at Andis.

After the school closed, it was owned by the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization. It was used for head start and other programs. It was, also, serve as Lawrence County’s alternative school.
