BLCL Summer Newsletter

FROM OUR DIRECTOR As the Executive Director of the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library system, allow me to welcome you to the inaugural issue of the Briggs Bulletin, the quarterly newsletter of the Briggs Lawrence County Public Library. I am celebrating my first year as Executive Director and guiding a renewal effort at our locations to be known for items and services beyond books. BLCPL is working on a variety of projects to bring new services, materials, and renewed physical spaces to the community of Lawrence County. We are committed to increasing our non-traditional offerings through a variety of projects as a part of our Beyond Books Initiative. Among the first new service offerings at BLCPL we will have free notary public services at our locations. If you need notary services in Lawrence County, we want to be your first stop. As part of our effort to renew our physical spaces the Phyllis Hamner Local History Room at our Ironton location has been cleaned, reorganized, and renewed. The Hamner Room now has new shelving as well as more shelving. More materials related to Lawrence County are displayed and available in the local history room. We’ve installed a new microfilm reader and a new digital scanner. We hope to digitize unique and rare items in our collection starting in 2025. As part of our commitment to new services, we have Awe Stations available at 4 of our locations: Chesapeake, Ironton, Proctorville, and South Point for educational games and educational instructional courses like beginning programming. We invite the community to visit our newly renovated Children’s Area at Ironton in order to enjoy the new sensory items and STEM materials available at the location. These are just a little bit of the new offerings from BLCPL coming to Lawrence County in 2024 and beyond. We’re excited for you to join us in this new chapter which goes beyond books! We’re bringing sensory skill building items and STEM materials to our juvenile area, starting our pilot bicycle lending program, upgrading our public use technology to help Lawrence County residents access: printing, faxing, scanning, and document management with greater ease, and FREE notary public services are now available at all our locations. As we move beyond books in a variety of ways, board games for family game nights and new video game titles across a variety of platforms, are now available. We also hope to develop a library collection including essential tools and craft materials at our libraries free for lending to the public later in 2024. YOUTH SERVICES RENOVATION Reimagining and Redesigning Our Youth-Oriented Spaces As librarians and clerks at Ironton’s Briggs Lawrence County Public Library branch, we see a lot of patrons. Some of our most loyal and most enthusiastic patrons are our youth patrons. From newborn to nearly grown we love our adventurous, inquisitive, and friendly youth patrons. With their needs in mind, we are reimagining and redesigning our youth-oriented spaces at our Ironton location. Our children’s area, perfect for children 0 – 12, has undergone a total remodeling to make the space more accessible, inviting, and kid friendly. We’ve integrated a Storytime zone, put in sizefriendly shelving for our little browsers— Briggsy’s Kids. We’ve added creativity initiatives and dexterity and skill building toys and learning stations. In the coming months we hope to add even more to the area with STEM products and kits, and sensory play items too. We want children to feel welcome to grow, learn, and explore at BLCPL. But, our plans don’t stop there! We recognize the value, wit, and creativity of our teen patrons and want to create an independent space for them at Ironton to gather, share and create. The path to adulthood has many challenges and rewards and we hope our upcoming Teen Area becomes a vital space to learn and create social connections for our young adults. No matter the age of the patron, BLCPL is working hard to be a vital and exciting part of the community, but we wanted to invite our young patrons to experience the results at BLCPL, Ironton as the space grows and changes in 2024.
